Topic: Pros and cons on teaching English from early elementary school years

-Background (Reason this discussion coming up nowadays):

① Japanese people start learning English from junior high school as a required subject, and also they basically continue to study English at least until the end of high school. Although Japanese study English for 6 years or longer, most of them still can not speak English fluently. Then, teaching English earlier than junior high school has become a hot topic recently.

② English became a world standard language and sometimes a must for business due to a globalization. Chinese, for instance, are obliged to learn English from elementary school. To be more competitive and to survive in the rapidly globalizing world, the idea of earlier English education has been prevalent among Japanese people

-Advantage:

① 13 years old is said as a critical age in a theory of linguistics to acquire the second language like a native speaker so that starting to study English from elementary school might be better to acquire more fluent English.

② It is not sure if there is really a critical age, but making teaching English as a duty in public school may give at least a chance to every children including poor family children to learn English.

③ Starting to learn English in elementary school might reduce the allergy toward English that currently many Japanese tend to have. Also, it would be good thing to get to know another culture by learning English.

-Disadvantage:

① There is a concern about the quality of English teacher. Different quality of English teachers could be unfair for many children.

② Starting to teach English from elementary school might give a rather bad influence on Japanese acquisition. That could yield many semi-lingual people who cannot speak both English and Japanese perfectly. Imperfect Japanese acquisition may impede children from learning other more important subjects and thinking logically, which should rather lower Japanese global competitiveness

-Conclusion:

Teaching English from early elementary school years should not be a duty but a choice. Disadvantageous points are more serious than advantageous points. It is not a matter of starting age but the way of studying English. If you take an appropriate way to study English, not like the way of studying English merely for the purpose of passing an entrance exam, and have a will to study English enthusiastically, it is not too late even after 13 years old to acquire English. Also, we all Japanese do not need to be perfect bilinguals. Many parents might have a complex about English and push their children to learn English, but for most Japanese, except for such as business persons and ! politicians, English is not a must in their daily lives. Acquiring English must be useful when traveling abroad and for some occupations, but starting English education from junior high school is good enough. Making a mother tongue perfect should be given high priority in early elementary school years.

大学卒業後商社に入社、結婚後は2か国の海外駐在を経験、帰国後に縁あって吉祥寺に住み始める。

カナダで受けたボランティア英会話サークルを地元で探すが見つからず、自分の勉強のため英語を積極的にアウトプットし英会話に慣れる場を提供する「英語サークル吉祥寺」を2007年2月に設立。いつの間にか時は過ぎ、2016年は9~10年目になります。(宗教・販売等は一切関係なしです。)

このたび新たに1から活動を開始します。中級レベルでもっと英語を話す機会を求めている方、外国人にガイドなどをボランティアでしたいと思っている方など、入会ご希望の方はお気軽にメール下さい。

TOEICポイント:2014年にようやく885までは来ましたが、このスコアでTOEIC卒業しようと思います。
